Science and Health Writing
In this upper level course students learn about the research into effective science communication and then put that theory into practice by writing long-form print pieces on topics of their choosing. The two major themes in the fall of 2007 were global climate change and sustainability. Here are some examples of their work.
Atlanta: Asthma Capital of the US: Jenn Diclemente discovers that Atlanta's traffic problems make it the nation's "Asthma Capital."
Sustainable Hospitals: While Emory University is making a major push for sustainability across campus, Rachel Zelkowitz reports on the challenges this presents for its hospitals.
Sustainable Transportation: Brett Israel reports on Emory's initiatives to reduce traffic congestion, among them "The Brain Train" idea that now meets with less neighborhood opposition.
Twin Myths: Kristi Porter clears up the many myths regarding twins and reports on science's latest discoveries with multiple births.
Georgia Biofuels: While ethanol is making news as a potential domestic energy source in the Midwest, Rachel Zelkowitz reports that Georgia's vast pine forests may provide an even greater fuel source for the nation, as well as an economic windfall for the state.
New Flu Patch: Nearly everyone dreads the annual flu shot. Now, as Jenn DiClemente reports new science and technology to deliver the needed vaccine through a painless patch, instead of a needle, is being developed here at Emory.
