Podcasts

What used to be called “radio reports” are not broadcast over the air, but rather now go directly to Itunes or other audio software programs of any user who clicks on the mp3 files.  Here are some examples of podcasts from recent semesters:

Gay Christians: Homosexuality is a controversial issue that has long been denounced by the Christian community. But for some Americans, they must grapple with being both gay and Christian.  As Yih Lee reports, we’ll hear what happens to the men and women caught in between, searching for acceptance in often unreceptive surroundings. (3:26)

Nursing Shortage:  Researchers project that the shortage of nurses will significantly increase in the next decade. Grace Kim investigates how the shortage may affect the treatment patients receive. (2:31)

Low Income Students:  In a recent education report, researchers found that more than half of all public school students in the South are living in poverty. Many fear the South will face grave consequences as the number of low-income students continues to increase every year. Angela Hong takes a look at how education officials in Atlanta are responding to this report and what is being done to help students in need.  (2:31)

On-Line Education:  The demand for online classes and digital degree programs continues to grow at our nation’s public universities. Eric Betts looks at the pros and cons of this still-young set of teaching tools, and explores why Emory won’t be offering online classes in the near future. (2:25)

Testing Bias: It's that time of the year again when nervous students prepare to take high-stakes college tests like the S-A-T and the A-C-T. These test scores provide one of the few ways colleges can compare applicants from across the country. But as Camille Bullock reports, the scores may discriminate against poorer students. (2:36)

Why Teachers Quit:  Many teachers in the United States quit after a few years, at a cost of billions of dollars to school systems. Grace Kim explores why so many teachers leave. (2:15)

Clinton-Women's Vote: With both a woman and an African American as serious presidential contenders, the 2008 election may make American history. Amanda Sopko explains what Senator Hillary Clinton's election to the White House could mean for women. (2:29)

Graduation Coaches:  Educators and citizens around the country worry about the large percentage of students that don’t graduate from high school. But Georgia is doing something about it. As Sarah Richards reports, a unique program to hire graduation coaches is helping more Georgia high school students get their diplomas. (2:13)

Art Funding: In the classroom, can song and dance coexist with grammar and fractions? Caitlin Yuhas checks the progress of one Georgia High School working to bring the arts to the forefront of education. (2:07)

Interfaith Outreach:  As colleges strive to attract more diverse groups of students each year, university staffs and students face the challenge of making everyone feel comfortable and welcome. Caroline Duncan explains how Emory students are trying to do that by crossing religious boundaries to foster friendships and dialogue about faith and the human spirit. (2:04)

International Students Many seniors are scrambling to decide what to do after receiving their diplomas. Eunice Lee reports on how one Emory senior's decision between grad school or a job comes with an additional twist. (2:01)

College Rankings It's the time of year when many high school seniors start filling out college applications and writing essays. Now more than ever, many of them depend on the U-S News and World Report rankings to determine which college is the right choice. But as Camille Bullock reports, some experts believe the rankings could be leading students in the wrong direction. (2:27)
