Africa South Program
The Journalism Program offers a unique six-week summer reporting and study trip in South Africa to provide students the
experience and challenge of reporting from a different country and different culture.
The opportunity is part of the "Interdisciplinary Internship in South Africa" program undertaken in cooperation
with African-American Studies, Women's Studies, Religion and African Studies. The Journalism students live and travel with
the other students who work on internships pertinent to their studies. Two Emory faculty members accompany the students.
In Journalism, newspaper, television and radio internships are the main focus of the program. The Journalism South Africa
Study Abroad Program was started in 1998, shortly after South Africa made its monumental transition from an oppressive apartheid
state to a democratic nation governed by majority rule. The internships in Cape Town allow students to cover that compelling
news story and expand their personal horizons in a way no classroom experience could ever provide.
Students receive 8 credit hours for the trip that begins at the end of the spring semester. During that semester, students
take a 4-credit preparatory course, South African History and Issues.
