The Program


Requirements

Co-Major

The journalism co-major requires admission to the program and successful completion of the following courses for a letter grade to total 32 credit hours:

Journalism 201WR News Reporting and Writing 4 credit hours
Journalism 301WR Advanced News Reporting and Writing 4 credit hours
Journalism 305 Communication Law 4 credit hours
Journalism 311 Electronic Media 4 credit hours
Journalism 430WR Journalism History and Ethics 4 credit hours
Journalism 496 Internship in Journalism 4 credit hours
Journalism 488 Special Topics and Other Elective Courses 8 credit hours
    32 credit hours

There are several ways to obtain elective credit in journalism. The Program offers a number of electives including feature writing, precision journalism, news video, health and science writing, arts writing and criticism and covering ethnic communities.

Students also can complete the elective requirement through the Interdisciplinary Internship in South Africa Program offered through the Center for International Programs Abroad every summer. Students earn 8 credit hours for the trip and are required to attend three introductory classes during the previous spring semester.

Co-Minor

The journalism minor requires admission to the program and the successful completion of the following courses for a letter grade to total 24 credit hours:

Journalism 201WR News Reporting and Writing 4 credit hours
Journalism 301WR Advanced News Reporting and Writing 4 credit hours
Journalism 305 Communication Law 4 credit hours
Journalism 311 Electronic Media 4 credit hours
Journalism 430WR Journalism History and Ethics 4 credit hours
Journalism 496 Internship in Journalism 4 credit hours
    24 credit hours

Journalism Honors

Journalism co-majors with a 3.5 cumulative grade point average may apply during their junior year to graduate with honors in journalism. To receive honors, the student must successfully complete the co-major requirements listed above and a journalistic project or journalism research paper.
