Internships

Requirements

The Journalism Program requires at least one editorial internship. A student must complete 400 hours in one or more editorial internships to receive the required 4.0 credit hours. Students may do as many internships as they like but can receive only 4.0 credits. Interns must be admitted to the Journalism Program to receive academic credit.

Students gain academic credit for internships by enrolling in JRNL496 Internship in Journalism. They must complete or be finishing the required 400 hours of internship and the five other required Journalism courses during the semester they enroll in JRNL496. Journalism grants academic credit only for print and electronic media internships unless special permission is granted. Contact your advisor to check if an internship is acceptable.

The course requirements are:

  • A professional website to document your internship work and to use in job-hunting. The site will include your resume, work samples, an introduction that serves as a cover letter, photographs, video and other web content to project you professionally. REMEMBER: these websites are open to all to read and are not private.

Your professional journalism webpage will be set up on Emory’s WebDrive. For information, go to http://it.emory.edu. You will learn the fundamentals of web design and content in JRNL311: Electronic Media, although your professional website will not be part of the work for that course. For ideas, check out the websites of Columbia Journalism students at http://www.nyc24.org/2006/staff.html.
  • An internship agreement spelling out the nature and terms of the internship and a supervisor’s evaluation for every internship counting toward your required 400 hours, including a verification of hours worked.

Print out the internship agreement (PDF) and return it completed and signed by your supervisor at the beginning of your internship. Evaluations should be filed electronically from the Journalism Program website after you complete your internship. Internship agreements and evaluations will be kept in your file in the Journalism office.

  • A five-page paper assessing your internships.

  • A passing grade on an editing test that includes grammar, spelling, accuracy and AP Style.

Journalism at Emory is a writing program for print and electronic media. The program does not offer courses in public relations or advertising. Credit for communications internships is granted selectively. Contact your advisor to check if an internship is acceptable.
