What is the Emory Journalism Program?
The Journalism Program is a four-year, undergraduate curriculum in which students combine journalism studies with another major in the liberal arts and sciences. Students can earn a co-major or minor in journalism. They cannot major solely in journalism. Journalism at Emory is a writing program for print and electronic media. The Program does not offer courses in public relations or advertising.
How many students are in the Journalism Program?
Journalism averages 60 co-majors and minors. Students are specially selected for the Program in an application process every semester.
Where is the Journalism Program located?
The Program offices are located in S106 Callaway, on the ground floor of Callaway Center on the Emory Quadrangle.
What is the difference in the requirements for a co-major and minor?
Students co-majoring or minoring in journalism take six required courses. All Journalism courses are four credits. Co-majors are required to take two additional four-credit electives.
Which majors in the liberal arts and sciences can be combined with a Journalism co-major or minor?
Students combine journalism with an array of other majors in the liberal arts and sciences. The largest majors are Political Science and English/Creative Writing. Other majors include Sociology, Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology, Dance, Economics, Theater Studies and Business.

How do I complete the elective requirement for the Journalism co-major?
The Journalism Program offers a variety of four-credit electives including News Video, Precision Journalism, Health and Science Writing, Arts Writing and Criticism, Covering Ethnic Communities and Feature Writing. Students also earn eight elective credits for the Interdisciplinary Internship in South Africa summer program offered through the Emory Center for International Programs Abroad (CIPA).
When and how do I apply to the Journalism Program?
Student may apply for the Journalism Program as soon as they enroll at Emory. Journalism accepts applications every semester. The application deadline is posted on the Journalism website..
How do I declare a Journalism co-major or minor?
Students declare the Journalism co-major or minor by completing the declaration form in the Journalism offices.
How does the student selection process work?
Student applications to the Journalism Program are reviewed by the faculty. Admissions are announced within several weeks of the application deadline. Applicants without student or professional journalism experience are not at a disadvantage.
Is there an application form?
There is no application form. Students seeking admission to the Journalism Program are asked to submit contact information, a three-page writing sample, brief answers to two essay questions, a transcript from the OPUS system and the name and contact information of a faculty reference.
How does the professional internship program work?
The Journalism Program requires at least one editorial internship. A student must complete 400 hours in one or more editorial internships to receive the required 4.0 credit hours. Students may do as many internships as they like but can receive only 4.0 credits. Interns must be admitted to the Journalism Program to receive academic credit.
How do I obtain an internship?
Students obtain internships on their own or through the Journalism Program. All Journalism students have a Learnlink internship site on their computer desktops. Internship opportunities are posted on the site throughout the school year.
How do I get credit for internships?
Students gain academic credit for internships by enrolling in JRNL496 Internship in Journalism. They must complete or be finishing the required 400 hours of internship and the five other required Journalism courses during the semester they enroll in JRNL496. Journalism grants academic credit only for print and electronic media internships unless special permission is granted.
How do I get a faculty advisor?
You will be assigned a faculty advisor when you are accepted to the Journalism Program.
